Alright, it's about time for a purely theatre-related entry. So here goes... It's been announced this week that Lion King will finally be closing in Toronto! Thank goodness! But unfortunately, Mamma Mia! is also temporarily closing, until the end of the September. So we are stuck with only one show in the city all summer, and not even a good one at that! Makes me very glad I'm heading to New York in August. But speaking of that, I'm so disappointed that Little Shop of Horrors has been postponed. :-( I suppose it's better that they delay it if the production is having problems, but I was really looking forward to seeing it. Hopefully they can fix whatever's not working, and bring it to New York later this year. Now, as for the Tonys. I was pretty happy with all the nominations, although I must confess to being surprised that Kerry Butler wasn't nominated. I predict that Hairspray will win most of the big awards - best musical, director, actor, actress, featured actor, as well as book and music. I think La Bohème will get the design ones, and Movin' Out will get choreography. I'm not sure about featured actress, though it will be *somebody* from Nine. I also think Nine will probably get Best Revival, although that's a tough contest. I'm not going to get into the plays, although I imagine Long Day's Journey into Night will pick up a couple. I'm already bitter about CBS taking over the entire broadcast though, when I read that six of the awards won't be presented on TV! Grrrr. I really enjoyed the PBS hour, the way they did the year in review things, and talked to all of the nominees in each category. I learned a lot about lighting and set design from those! We all know I adore Brent Carver, but what is up with this mustache??
