After-Tony-thoughts

Wow, I feel so important, with so many people asking for my thoughts on last night's Tonys. :-) So here they are!

I would like to state first of all that I successfully predicted 19 out of the 22 awards, which is more than the New York Times did! :-) The only ones I didn't get were orchestrations (I went with Hairspray, though I thought they might give it to Billy Joel), costumes (I honestly thought Bohème would win that one), and featured actress in a play (though I'm *thrilled* Michele Pawk won, I just didn't think she would). All of the rest, I picked right! That's a new record for me. :-)

The pre-show webcast was fun - I love Alan Cumming! I think the quote of the night for me was from him: "The orchestrator is the person who decides which instruments....wait a minute! If all you show queens don't know what an orchestrator does, then I'm Bernadette Peters!" :-)

However, it only took about 10 minutes to hand out the awards for orchestrations, set, lighting and costumes (as two of the winners weren't there)...I don't see why on earth those couldn't have been presented on the broadcast! I don't have as much of a problem with the lifetime achievement and regional theatre awards not being televised, but honestly, I think they could have fit it all in. I mean, they already actually went over time, for goodness' sake! It must be a first in Tony history!

The dancers in Movin' Out are amazing. When I was working on Fosse, I got to go watch a photo shoot with Elizabeth Parkinson, and she's absolutely phenomenal. It's the kind of show I'd like to see, but not necessarily pay to see. ;-)

Hugh Jackman was a good host, though he seemed pretty nervous. And he needs a hair cut. :-) Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker were very cute! Yay for theatre geeks! :-)

The Hairspray performance was fun! Although if you didn't know the story, the Von Tussle women thing didn't really make sense. However, that's pretty minor compared to the La Bohème performance, where *nothing* made sense. Honestly, I think that's one of the worst performances I've ever seen on the Tonys. It just didn't work at *all*. Which is sad, because the show is actually really good, but that won't entice anyone to see it.

Did anyone else notice how Antonio Bandares vibrates his head when he has to sing a big note? I don't know if I'd be able to watch him do a whole show without laughing. :-)

Bernadette Peters looks very interesting in Gypsy, although she was having vocal problems. Brian Stokes Mitchell was having no vocal problems at all. He sounded wonderful, and delivered probably the second best version of that song I've ever heard (after Anthony, of course!).

And then Alan came back: "Earlier tonight....we had a fabulous time, and here are the highlights." He cracks me up. :-)

Lots of the acceptance speeches were good/funny/touching, but I've probably dragged this out long enough for now. :-) Overall, it was enjoyable, if nothing spectacular.

On a completely different note, let's test the power of positive thinking, and everybody just imagine for a moment that my mother has sold her house. We'll see if it works. :-)
