Home for a rest [21 October 2007]
[ time started | 11:34 a.m. ]

Once again I have nothing very exciting to report - this month has been pretty quiet. That's partly due to needing a bit of a break after the non-stop activity of the summer, but mostly because I had to pay two month's worth of rent last month, and so have not had a lot of spending money this month!

So this weekend I spent some time in one of the great free attractions in London, the British Museum. I'd been there a couple of times before, when I visited the city as a tourist, but it's the first time I've been back since I moved here. It is really just astonishing, and I will have to get back to actually try to see most of it while I've got the chance.

Work has been busy - they brought in a temp to cover for me while I'm home, so I've been training her. It's the first time I've been important enough to need a temp! :-) We also stayed late one night to do screening for the internship program, so that whole madness is starting up again - can't believe it's been six months since we did it the last time!

One of the perks of working where I do in the building is that we're right near the fancy corporate lunches that are put on for clients, and we occasionally get leftovers - food or flowers! This week I got this beautiful arrangement of white roses, so I brought them home and have been enjoying them ever since. :-)

I'm working tomorrow, and then flying to Toronto on Tuesday. It's kind of strange how much I'm looking forward to it, considering how happy I was to leave - but of course, it's the people I'm looking forward to seeing! I'll be there for nearly two weeks, but will try to update while I'm there (my laptop is coming with me - I'm a little attached to it now). So hopefully I will see many of you soon, and the rest of you, have a great week!

Working for a living [13 October 2007]
[ time started | 8:55 a.m. ]

This is only the second time since I started work in April that I've had to work four full weeks without a day off. I am so spoiled. :-)

Tuesday night was the pub quiz night, and although our team was a bit depleted (our whole department is sick, me included), we still had a good time! I wish I could say our score fared so well, but it's just about having fun anyway, right? I realized fairly quickly I was only going to be of limited help when our first task was to "fill in the next line" of famous bits of TV dialogue - none of which I had ever heard of before, as they were all British shows! And we had a fairly amusing moment during the actual quiz where I thought the answer to a question was Boggle (you know, the game with making words out of letters), and they all thought I was making it up 'cause they'd never heard of it before. Just goes to show American culture isn't quite as prevalent here as one might think. Anyway, we didn't come last, so avoided the wooden spoon, which was our main quest after about the third round! :-)

Other than that, and a couple of drinks after work last night, my week has pretty much consisted of staying at home and trying to get completely better. I've had this cold/stomach thing since Peggy got here, which is 4 weeks ago now! I'm quite ready for it to go away.

While at home, I've been amusing myself by planning (as I do). There's the Christmas getaway for Todd and I - we're deciding between a castle in Wales and a chateau in France - what a life! I've also started work on my big post-England trip, which is actually not going to be quite as complicated as I thought, as I only need to get visas for two countries. The trick will be finding the time when I am not planning to leave the country, so I can leave my passport at the embassies for two weeks!

Other trips before then are hopefully going to include Portugal and a skiing weekend in Switzerland, and a trip to a Christmas market somewhere on the continent in December - just have to figure out which one! I'd still love to get to Morocco, but I don't think it's going to happen at this time. And then there's Croatia/Bosnia, which I was hoping to do with Zorana, but she's actually there right now, and I can't go because a) I'm broke and b) I'm going to Toronto.

I don't know if I mentioned, but Krista is coming back with me when I return from Toronto! She's actually flying on the same flight out of Toronto, and will be here for two weeks. So I won't have any time to pout about missing my boys.

In theatre news, when I get back from Toronto a group of us from work are going to see Hairspray (with Michael Ball - hee!), and I'm going to see Macbeth with Patrick Stewart, which should be awesome. I had actually considered going to Footloose, but I've talked to a couple of people who've seen it and said it was horrible, so looks that might be a pass. I also still need to get to Joseph, which I keep forgetting about. Maybe I can go with Karen and Gill once they've made their move over here - shouldn't be long now!

I've found where I want to live - and guess what, it's only $70 million! :-) Check it out at Christie's Great Estates.

Alright, better get a start to my day. I'm planning on having a quiet weekend - running some errands, starting to pack, that sort of thing. Hope you all enjoy yours as well!

Fall in the city [7 October 2007]
[ time started | 2:41 p.m. ]

British commercials are so weird.

I've been sick most of this week - started off with a stomach thing, and now I've got a cold. It's really annoying, especially because I hadn't even really got over the last cold yet. I haven't had a sick day from work yet, but if I'm feeling this terrible tomorrow, we'll have to see.

On Tuesday this week I went to see Parade. I was really excited to see it, as I hadn't seen the show since the Broadway production 8 years ago. This one wasn't quite as good as that one, but it was still thoroughly enjoyable, and I sobbed from about the beginning of "All the Wasted Time" all the way through to the end. I guess it really is worse when you know what's going to happen. :-)

I do have to mention, though, that the whole experience of going to the show at the Donmar, other than the show itself, was one of the worst theatre-going experiences I've ever had. Getting the ticket was a disaster, and then the staff at the theatre was so geared towards their "friends" (people who donate money to the Donmar) that I actually felt unwelcome! And I had to go way out of my way to find someone who would sell me a program. Just a really bad experience all round - can't say I'll be rushing out to the Donmar again anytime soon!

The new TV season has started, and British TV is showing Ugly Betty only one week behind the US. Yay! I've also seen the first 2 episodes of Smallville already, and they weren't bad - I have some hope for this season.

Laurie is getting married next weekend! I'm really sad I will miss it, but I can't really go to Ottawa when I'm already going home the following week. :-( If you haven't seen it already, check out their wedding site, it's too good.

That's about it for now. On Tuesday, we're having a pub quiz night at work, and I'm on a team with a few other people from my department, so hopefully we do well! And hopefully I have my voice back.
