Moving Too Fast
September 26, 2002
Do you know what I hate? I hate when people feel the need to get up and stand by the door of the subway/bus/streetcar the second the train/bus/car leaves the stop before their stop. Do they think they're going to forget, so they get up to remind themselves? Is it really that important to be the first one out the door?
This especially annoys me in two situations that occur practically every day. The first is in the mornings, at the main interchange between the two subway lines. The train is always packed by this point, and the VAST majority of people get out at this stop. I am always standing, because by the time the train picks me up, all the seats are full. I am also getting out at that stop. However, that doesn't stop the people who are sitting from getting up *immediately* after we leave the stop before Yonge, and pushing their way past all the people who are standing (most of whom are also getting out), to get to the door. First of all, there is at least a minute between the stops - there is no need to get up and stand for a minute on a crowded train that is going to empty at the next stop. The train will NOT leave before you get off. Secondly, pushing people who are standing on a moving train can often involve pushing them off balance - I am just waiting to see a major accident.
The other situation is on the way home. The stop I get off at is one of the last stops on the east end of the train route. The stops are most spaced out there. There is between 2 and 3 minutes between stops - and, just in case you were afraid you were going to miss it, there is a bridge outside right before the subway station, so unless you're blind to the sudden flash of daylight, you'll see it coming. Yet, every single day, people jump to their feet as soon as the doors close at the previous station, and jostle with each other to be the one standing by the door. I will often be standing (again, not enough seats) in the general area of the door, since I'll be getting off too, and will have people ask to get by, and then stand *right* in front of me. Is that .2 seconds you save by stepping off the train before me *really* going to make all that much of a difference in your life??
And the thing that bugs me the most is that these are not tourists, or people who are honestly afraid of missing their stop - these are the people who ride the subway every single day.
Okay. This is just something that's been bothering me for a long time. I feel better having gotten it off my chest. :-) I guess I just miss taking the streetcar to work! Although people do this sort of thing on there too, I notice it a lot more on the subway.
Other than that, life is going on pretty much the same as always here! I had a seminar yesterday about vocational rehabilitation - pretty fascinating stuff. ;-) Oh, but the (honestly) exciting news of the week would be that Jesper Tydén signed the guestbook on my website for him! Check it out: Jesper Tydén Fan Website.

The biggest news of all would be: I am writing this at home! On my very own computer!! This is so exciting. :-) Of course, I have been spending entirely too much time on it since it arrived, but I have just been in such withdrawal. I'm sure in a year or two the novelty will wear off. :-)
Other than that, I have done very little over the past week. I might have some exciting times coming up - I am trying to organize little day-trips to Detroit and Quebec City for various things, and soon I will have to start planning my NYC trip in November....by then it will be quite a long time since I'll have seen any show! Toronto really needs some new theatre.
Yay for Laurie there who got to see her favourite band in the whole world last night. I have not heard details yet, but I am greatly looking forward to it.
There are only 99 days until Christmas! Since I have been counting down since New Year's, it was very exciting to me to get below 100. :-)

Okay, as some of you probably noticed, my site was down for the last 2 weeks. I've been without Internet access (my computer hasn't arrived yet :-( ), so I wasn't able to fix it...sorry for taking away once source of procrastination for some of you (you know who you are ;-).
I spent this past weekend playing tour guide! One of my cousins from Victoria is here on her way back home from Montréal, so I tried to show her a bit of the city. We went up the CN Tower on Saturday, and to Casa Loma yesterday. We tried to go see something at the film festival, but we couldn't get tickets to anything we wanted to see, so we ended up just going to see Austin Powers instead. Not quite the same thing, I know. ;-) However, it was worth it to me just for the opening sequence. I am going to have to buy the darn thing when it comes out on DVD just for the opening sequence.
We are at the new office at work, and I am getting used to it. I do miss being downtown a lot, but there are some fun stores and stuff here too. There are a lot of people in the office that I don't know, so it's all a little confusing, but I guess it will get better as time goes by. I'll survive, at any rate. :-)
Alright, that's it for now - just wanted to apologize for the site being down, and let you know it's fixed now.
