Random musings [27 August 2007]
[ time started | 7:46 p.m. ]

The weekend is pretty much over, and as usual when I spend a lot of time by myself, I'm feeling pretty melancholy. In particular, I was looking up some people online that I used to know, and it made me quite sad. How is it that you can completely lose touch with people who once meant so much to you? Sometimes it was my fault, sometime it wasn't. And some of them, surely I never meant as much to them as they did to me.

It's sad to see what life can do to some people. There was a guy I knew in high school (okay, had a HUGE crush on) who was absolutely brilliant in every way, and seemed to have everything going for him, and his life completely fell apart. He's been mentally ill, addicted to drugs, has HIV. It just doesn't seem fair.

Other people seem to be doing really well - and yet that somehow upsets me as well. I wish I could share in it with them, even though there was usually a reason why we aren't in touch anymore. Guys I dated who are married now, former friends having exciting careers. I wonder if they ever think about me.

Alright, enough wondering for now. Just a few more days of work (2 and a half, to be precise) until Todd arrives!

August! [26 August 2007]
[ time started | 11:25 a.m. ]

First of all, my apologies that this is my first entry in here in August!! It just goes to show that I have been VERY busy this month. This weekend is a long weekend here in the UK, and I am spending the whole weekend at home, which is just what I need right now. I have not had a whole weekend in London since early June!!

A couple of quick updates on life in general before I move on to talking about recent travels in more detail. Work is going really well, and I've extended my contract there until the end of February. Which will be the last extension, as I've timed it to coincide with the end of my lease (which I also extended till the end of February). At that point, I'll take my last paycheque and my returned rent deposit and head off to eastern Europe and Scandinavia for a month before heading home. The current plan is to hit Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, possibly Russia, Finland and Sweden, ending with the World Figure Skating Championships in Sweden in March. After that, it will be time to go home!!

Mom went home this past Tuesday, after 8 weeks here in London. I really enjoyed having her here! It's been quite a while since we spent that much time together!! Of course, the living quarters were a bit cramped - I can't imagine how two people normally live in one of these apartments! (And they do - most of the ones in this building have two people in them) On Thursday night was a big night out with the guys from work as one of the girls was leaving for a new job, but other than that, I've been mostly just relaxing since Mom left and getting ready for the next visitor.

Which is Todd, of course. :-) I'm so excited for him to come. It has been nearly 6 months since we've seen each other. The long distance thing is HARD. I knew before I came that this would really be a test of our relationship, but, at least in my opinion, the result is clear - it's really shown me that I much prefer having him around. Of course I CAN survive on my own, but I'd rather be with him. And any little things that may have bothered me before seem so insignificant. I think in the long run this time apart will actually make our relationship stronger. But right now I just want to see him!!!

Here's a "Simpsonized" version of us. :-) I'm not sure how I ended up taller!

Okay, now on to the trips! I took a whole week off at the beginning of August for our big trip, which lasted 9 days. We flew into Munich and then had Eurail passes to travel around by train the rest of the way. We even had 1st class passes, which was pretty sweet. :-) I'll give a brief breakdown of our activities:

Munich and area
Our first day was spent at Dachau concentration camp, just outside of Munich. This was the first concentration camp built by the Nazis, and was used as a model for the rest of them. I had wanted to visit a camp for quite some time, and it was just as affecting as I'd expected. We had spent the night before at Heathrow, so that night was a fairly early one to recover. The next day was spent at Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein castles, which I had visited on my trip in 2003, but I wanted Mom to see them. It was a really fun day!

Prague
Prague was the place we spent the longest on the trip because I had never been there before either. I'd always heard such great things about it though, and it definitely lived up to them. It's just a gorgeous city, and there's so much to see. Since we didn't have all that much time, we took several guided tours around, which gave us a really good idea of the layout and history of the city. Now I need to get back sometime and actually go into all the buildings that we saw!!

Budapest
We basically just had one day in Budapest and unfortunately it wasn't QUITE as enjoyable as it might have been, as we were pretty tired from the overnight train ride from Prague, plus it was HOT, but we still managed to fit quite a bit in! We made it to St. Stephen's Cathedral, which I had missed out on the last time I was there. We also took the funicular up the hill to Buda Castle, although that was mainly from necessity - neither of us felt like trudging up the hill in the heat!!

Vienna
Vienna is just one of my favourite cities, period, and this time was no exception. We had a lot of fun at the House of Music (my third time there and still interesting), has a less crowded tour of Schonbrunn than my last time there, had a lovely tea break at the Sacher hotel cafe, and visited the Prater, where we actually spent a fair bit of time going on rides. They had a "Swing of the Century" type ride that first went very high before spinning around. But it wasn't scary at all, and offered a lovely view of the city and surrounding area. One of my favourite moments on the trip.

Salzburg
I will have to go back to Salzburg. It was pouring the whole time we were there, and then most of our time was taken up with the Sound of Music tour, which was a lot of fun, but there's still a lot of the city we didn't see!

That is a REALLY brief synopsis - for a much more detailed (and entertaining!) read of the trip, visit my mom's blog.

Here are a few pictures:

For Mom's last weekend here, we took one last trip, this time entirely by train. We took the Eurostar from London to Brussels, where we had a 4-hour layover. I hadn't been to Brussels before, so we did a quick walking tour of the city centre, and then got down to the real business of stopping there, which was ... to have waffles! :-) And they were just as good as I'd been hoping for.

From there, we took the train on to Amsterdam. Mom had really wanted to go to the Netherlands, so we have a day and a half there. Sunday was mostly spent out at Zanns Schaans, a really pretty little "folk museum", made of old homes and windmills, with traditional crafts and other demonstrations. It was really neat! We did a few of the things I'd done in Amsterdam before, such as the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh museum, plus a cruise along the canals.

So that's it for my mom's trip! Next weekend Todd and I are going to Venice, which I'm really looking forward to. I haven't been there before. I'm only working 3 1/2 days while he's here, so we should have lots of time together. I probably won't have time to update while he's here, but I promise to shortly afterwards!

Hope all of your summers have been wonderful as well!

Catching up, part 2 [28 July 2007]
[ time started | 10:10 p.m. ]

Well, the month is just about over, and it's certainly been a busy one! With company to entertain, I haven't had too many quiet nights in. Here's what we've been up to:

First things first, I'll explain briefly the deal with my apartment. Right after we got back from Palma, the manager came to me and told me that the flat beneath mine had flooded, and so they needed me to move to another room so that they could work on the flooded room. This was supposed to last for the rest of my lease, until the end of August. I went to look at the new room, and I wasn't really thrilled with it, but what could I do? I wasn't really being given a choice.

So, on the Saturday evening, my mom and I moved all my stuff up to the other flat and cleaned the old one from top to bottom. We barely had time to start unpacking before on Wednesday morning (3 days later), they called me at work and let me know that they were done working on the other flat, and wanted me to move back to it. Grrrrrrrrrr. So that evening, we had to move everything back again. At least, the plus side is we hadn't unpacked that much, AND I liked the first room better anyway. But still, it was a huge pain that I really could have done without.

Anyway! Despite all that, we've been having a great time. On Friday, July 13th, Mom and I went to see Kismet, starring Michael Ball. I had got her the tickets as a Mother's Day gift, as she's been a fan of Michael's forever, and we'd always wanted to go see him together. The show was not so great, but he was wonderful, naturally. We ventured around the stage door afterwards, and despite being very crowded, my mom managed to get a picture with him! Yay!! As you can see from the photo, she's very happy, and she is still grinning about it to this day. :-)

The next day, we took the train to Bath for the day. We started out with the bus tour there to get our bearings, and then got off at the Jane Austen Centre. It wasn't anything spectacular, but the little introductory talk was good. We had lunch at a little Italian place and then headed on to the Roman baths, which took us quite a while to get through! The tour guide on the bus had warned everyone about drinking the water from the spring (it has quite a distinctive taste), but we didn't find it too bad. It does come out pretty hot though!

We did a second bus tour after that, which drove us out into the countryside and around the hills for a bit. We wanted to stop in the Abbey when we got back to the city, but we just missed the closing time, so we walked around a bit before heading back to the train station and our train back to London.

On Sunday we spent the afternoon at Windsor Castle, which I had already been to, but thought my mom would enjoy. Pictures from Bath and Windsor are below!

The following week was my mom's first full week in London by herself while I was working, so she did a few trips on her own, to the Natural History Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. We also went to see Billy Elliot one evening, from the second row, and I enjoyed it much more this time around.

We were up verrrrrrrrry early on Saturday morning to head to Gatwick to catch our flight to Edinburgh. We arrived in Scotland around 8 am, and after dumping our stuff at the hostel, headed to Edinburgh Castle, where we did both the guided tour and the audio tour, and so were there for quite a while. We wandered down the Royal Mile, stopping for shopping along the way, as well as getting tea at a lovely little tea house, before ending at Holyrood House Palace, which we also toured.

After a nap (we were up really early!) and dinner, we joined up with the "ghosts and ghouls" walk that evening which, despite the rain, was very enjoyable. It ended with a brief walk through the underground vaults, and, as we'd paid the extra 1.50 for the extended tour, a half hour in an underground wine cellar, with a free glass of wine and more stories.

Sunday morning we went to Mass at the university chapel, and then had a very yummy lunch at a pub on the Grassmarket. We went to check out the Mary King's Close tours, but they were booked up for the day, so we went instead to the Museum of Scotland, where we showed up for the Highlights tour and ended up being the only ones who did! So we got a private tour. We took a quick look around Greyfriar's Cemetery before grabbing our stuff and heading back to the airport. A pretty quick day and a half there, but I really enjoyed being back there, and my mom liked Scotland a lot too. She says she'd like to go back!

This past week my mom got even more adventurous and took in St. Paul's Cathedral, the Museum of London, and Madame Tussaud's wax museum. We went to see the movie version of Hairspray (fun!), and Phantom on Thursday night. I wasn't so fond of Earl Carpenter as the Phantom, but the show was still good.

Today we had planned to go to Stratford-upon-Avon, but with the flooding that's happened in England recently, it wasn't really the best timing. So we headed south instead, to Brighton, since it was supposed to be a sunny day. Not surprisingly, it was not sunny. Still, we enjoyed our day, visiting the Royal Pavilion, the Pier (I went on a ride called the Booster, which was really fun!), sitting on the beach briefly, and doing some shopping in The Lanes.

Now it's time for sleeping. :-) Tomorrow we are staying in London, and this coming week will be fairly quiet as we're gearing up for the big trip which begins next Saturday. But before I go, here's one last picture, which is just too cute for words...my two nephews:

Catching up [12 July 2007]
[ time started | 9:15 p.m. ]

Okay! Where to begin? I really didn't mean to leave it so long without updating in here, and there's been quite a bit going on, so I think I will separate it into different sections!

My new nephew

My brother and his wife had a baby boy on July 1, Canada Day! They named him Alex Lee. It's a lovely name, but I must admit to being a bit upset that they chose it, since I have ALWAYS wanted to name my son Alexei, and recently loved the idea of shortening it to Lex. And now I can't! :-( It's not fair.

That said, he looks very cute. :-) I won't be able to see him for quite a while, probably not until next spring or summer even. But my brother's put up a blog, so I'll be able to keep updated with pictures and such. Here are a few of my favourites so far:

Milan

Aside from some trouble finding the hotel when I arrived at 1 a.m. (it wasn't marked at all!), the trip to Milan went very smoothly. After my late night arrival on Friday, I got up fairly early on Saturday and went first to the Duomo, the huge and gorgeous cathedral in the centre of the city. I did the audio guide tour of the interior, and then climbed the steps up to the roof for an amazing view of the city. They let people walk around all over on the roof, which just goes to show that it's pretty solidly constructed!

I had hoped to see a show at La Scala, but there no performances on a Saturday (for some reason!), so I just went to the museum there instead. Luckily it included a chance to peek into the auditorium itself, which was amazing! I had a pizza lunch, just 'cause I had to, and then headed over to the Castle Salfora, where there were more museums. I finished the sightseeing with a stop at the Brera gallery to take in some Italian art. I spent some time just hanging out in the lovely sun in one of the city parks before heading back to the hotel for a panini dinner and a quiet night, before catching the morning flight back.

All in all, a pretty whirlwind trip, but definitely worth it! Of course there is still much more of Italy I want to see, but it was a start!

Paris

My mom and sister arrived on the 27th of June, about 5 hours late! They were pretty wiped out from the flight, so we had a low key day of resting and doing a little bit of walking around downtown, from Parliament through Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus and my work. On the Thursday, we spent the day at Hampton Court, which was a lot of fun! We did two of the guided tours, 3 of the audio tours, and the gardens, so we were there most of the day. Afterwards, we headed back into the city and went to Brick Lane, where we had good Indian food in a restaurant there.

Friday we left for Paris! We waited too long to book tickets, and so couldn't take the Eurostar as it was far too expensive. So we decided to take the bus over, and fly back. The bus ride was about 7 hours long, and went through the chunnel on a train, which was quite interesting. Unfortunately it poured for most of the trip, so there wasn't much sightseeing to be had. Luckily by the time we arrived in Paris it had pretty much petered out, and we made our way to the hotel without getting soaked. We went first to the Eiffel Tower, which was our first experience with the terrible crowds in the city all weekend. We went all the way to the top, despite the wait, and got some great views of the city. When we made it down, we went for dinner at a cafe just down the street, and then called it a night.

On Saturday we went first to the Champs Elysees and the Arc de Triomphe, which Aubrey and I climbed while Mom chickened out and waited at the bottom. We wandered from there back down the street, where Mom insisted on stopping for coffee so she could say she had a drink on the Champs Elysees - 30 Euro later, we had our drink!

We caught the RER out to Versailles, where the lines were unbelievable, and it took us over an hour and a half to even get in the palace. We got the audio guides, which I didn't have the last time I was there, but I didn't find them that helpful this time around. After looking around inside, we paid the extra fee to visit the gardens, and then the fountains turned off 15 minutes after we got in! Grrrrr! Still, we wandered the gardens a bit and had a quick bite to eat there before going back to the city.

We got off at the Musee d'Orsay and walked through the Tuileries back up the river to take the nighttime cruise along the Seine. This was the third time I've done it, but the first time on Bateaux Mouche, the most well-known company, and I definitely wouldn't go with them again. Too crowded and the commentary was not very good.

Sunday we went to Mass at Notre Dame and looked around there a bit. Aubrey and I had wanted to climb the towers, but the lineup was long and was moving very slowly, so we decided to pass. We went instead to Sainte-Chapelle, my favourite church that I've been to, and looked around in there a bit. After lunch in the Chatelet square, we walked back up to the river to the Louvre, which was free that day and ... you guessed it ... very crowded. Still, we saw quite a bit in there, including the Mona Lisa, naturally. They've moved it since the last time I was there, and I don't know if it flows as well.

So overall the weekend was good, even if the crowds were bothering us, but we still had to get home, which ended up being an unwanted adventure. Our flight was delayed nearly two hours, so we knew we'd be cutting it close to catch the tube from Heathrow before it shut down for the night. What we didn't know was that some idiot had driven a car into the Glasgow airport that weekend, and that Heathrow was under a sort of mini-lockdown. So by the time we arrived, not only was the tube closed (before it should have been), but buses and taxis weren't being allowed up to the terminal either. So at midnight, we had to hike across the highway to the Hilton, and take a cab back into the city, which set us back $140! Not good.

Pictures of Paris are below:

Palma

The week in between our weekends away was also busy! I was back at work, but Mom and Aubrey kept busy with visiting the National Gallery, the London Eye, the British Museum, Westminster Abbey, watching the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, and doing one of the Big Bus tours. In the evenings, we saw Blood Brothers and Wicked, both of which were very enjoyable. I hadn't seen Blood Brothers in about five years, and really enjoyed it this time around.

On the Friday, we caught our flight to Palma de Majorca! This was by far the furthest south I've been in Europe, and was an absolutely lovely place to visit. We adored the old city, with its narrow streets, hidden squares and shops. We just walked around the night we arrived, and had a dinner of paella down by the seafront.

The main reason to go to Palma was the beach, and so on Saturday we hit our first one! We spent about 6 hours there, and I managed to get quite thoroughly burnt, mostly the result of spending a lot of time in the water, I think. It was sooo salty and buoyant, I just floated in the waves. When we tired of the sun, we went back into Palma and went to Mass at the gorgeous cathedral there before having a disappointing dinner in the Placa Major.

Sunday we headed out of Palma and took a wooden train up through the mountains to the north coast of the island, to the town of Port de Soller. There we laid on another beach for the day, where it was even hotter. This one was on a bay, so the water was a lot calmer and soooo clear! You could see forever in it. We had a nice dinner on the seafront there, and then headed back to Palma to catch our flight back.

Of course, continuing Aubrey's streak of delayed flights, we were late getting back and missed our pre-paid bus back to the city. We had to buy tickets with a different company instead, and walk for about 20 minutes after we got off the bus to get home, which we finally did around 3 a.m.

Again, it was a real pain, but didn't take away from the general wonderfulness of the weekend. Some pictures from Palma:

The rest

Since we got back, Mom and Aubrey spent a day at the Tower of London and another at Leeds Castle, and Aubrey did some shopping on Oxford Street. In the evenings, we did the Jack the Ripper walk and went to see a production of Little Shop of Horrors. This morning, I got up early to take Aubrey to the airport, as her trip is now over. Mom is still here for another 6 weeks though!

Whew, this is getting long...there's more to tell in relation to my apartment and such, but I'm going to have to leave that for another time. Hopefully much quicker than last time.

Hope you're all enjoying your summer!!

Summer is here! [21 June 2007]
[ time started | 7:53 p.m. ]

My apologies - I didn't realize it had been quite so long since I'd put an entry in here!

Time is really flying now - my mom and sister arrive in 5 days! I can't believe it's finally here, I've been excited about them coming for so long. And now I feel like there's not enough time to finish everything I need to do. Of course, that's largely because I'm going to Italy this weekend, instead of staying home and making sure that everything is ready. But it's Italy! I couldn't help it.

I had a really nice time last weekend, despite spending nearly 14 hours in a bus. It was a double decker bus, and I got one of the seats in the very front for the whole trip, so I had a great view of the scenery. And on the way down to Devon (which is in the south-west of England), the motorway was closed because of an accident, so we took an alternate route that ended up going right by Stonehenge! I have to say, from the bus, it wasn't as impressive as I'd always imagined it to be, but I'm sure it's a lot better once you get right up to it on foot. :-)

Because we were delayed, I arrived at around 3:00, and the people I was staying with (who are friends of Todd's grandmother from when she lived there) took me out for lunch and then drove me around the area a bit, including a ferry ride over to Dartmouth, and a stop in Totnes. The next day we went around Paignton, Torquay, Teignmouth and Brixham, with lots of lovely beach and cliff views. I had some excellent fresh fish and chips, as well as the requisite "cream tea" - scones, jam and clotted cream. I left just after 4:00 on Sunday, so was there for just over 24 hours.

Todd and I have been doing some preliminary scouting of places to live in Vancouver. Neither of us are very familiar with the city, so we're asking around to see what areas are good to look in. I'm also trying to figure out how long I want to stay here, since I need to figure out if I'm renewing the lease on my apartment. I'm thinking at the moment that I will renew it for 6 months, which will take me up to the end of February, and then take March off just to travel, and go back to Toronto at the end of March, before going on to Vancouver. But that could all change!!

I leave for Milan straight from work tomorrow night, and I have no idea yet what I am going to do when I get there! So maybe I should go figure that out. :-) Here are some pictures from Devon!

Being sick [10 June 2007]
[ time started | 10:34 a.m. ]

To celebrate my three-month anniversary here in London I decided to get a cold. :-) Well, not really decided - more like I was given one by some co-workers who had it earlier in the week. So I've been pretty miserable for about four days now - still went in to work on Thursday and Friday, but have really laid low this weekend and tried to recover. On Friday night, I did have a really nice dinner out with Amanda, as we'd been planning it for a while and I didn't want to cancel, and aside from the continual nose-blowing, we had a good time!

Being inside all weekend is, however, giving me a chance to get caught up on some of my email and website stuff, so that's probably a good thing. And really, this was the best possible weekend for me to get sick, since it's the only weekend for quite a while that I don't have anything planned. So I hope the cold fairies remember that I've already had mine if they come around again anytime soon.

Anyway! Last weekend ended up being an absolutely gorgeous weekend (as has this one, though I haven't really been outside much). On the Saturday, after finally getting my hair cut, I went to spend the afternoon in Hyde Park, a huge park downtown, not far from my office. And on Sunday, I took a bus down to Leeds Castle in Kent. Laurie and Amanda had gone to this castle the first time I was in England, but I didn't go that time, and I had always wanted to check it out. It is a really lovely place, with beautiful gardens, an aviary, a hedge maze, a dog collar museum (weird!), and of course the castle. I think I will have to send my mom and my sister down on a day trip one of the days that I am working while they're here. Pictures are below!

Last night was the final of the reality show where they were picking the new lead for the Joseph revival here in London. Yes, I admit, I actually watched a few episodes, and I did even have a favourite, who, much to my relief, was the winner! So it will be interesting to go see him in the show when it opens this summer. I still can't say that I'm a fan of the idea of casting a show through reality TV, but at least this guy is someone who has been in theatre before.

I've also been busy this week planning more trips, mostly for when my mom is here, but also with some of my other visitors. I now have trips planned to Devon and Milan (by myself), Paris and Majorca (with my mom and sister), Edinburgh, Munich, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Brussels and Amsterdam (with my mom), Venice (with Todd) and Rome (with Peggy). That should last me for quite a while!!

I'm also trying to decide if I want to find a new apartment. My lease at this place is only until the end of August, so they want to know by the end of June if I'm staying on or not. I probably could find a cheaper place, but I like my location now (the proximity to the tube), and I'm not sure I want the hassle of moving. I guess it depends how much cheaper. :-) So I'll have to do some looking around over the next few weeks and make a decision.

Alright, going to go back to working through my email! I do really want to thank everyone from home who's taken the time to write me - it's very much appreciated, even if I don't get back to you very quickly!!

Hello to June! [1 June 2007]
[ time started | 9:15 p.m. ]

Sorry to keep you all in suspense about my long weekend. :-) I did end up going away for two days, but not where I had been planning to! I ended up taking the bus to Cardiff, Wales, and spent a really nice couple of days there, despite the pouring rain on the day I arrived. It's just amazing to me how close everything is here! Cardiff was only three hours on the bus, like going to Edmonton at home.

I spent the morning at Cardiff Castle, which is really gorgeous inside. The interiors were all re-done in the 19th century, in an extremely extravagant style, and they're just amazing. The afternoon was at St. Fagans National History Museum, which was a lot bigger than I had expected! I made it back into the city in time for a quick dinner (where a vodka & cranberry was only 20p more than a plain cranberry juice...hmmmm...which to go for?) before the bus back to London that night.

Just before I left, on the Saturday night, my cousins stopped back in at nearly the mid-point of their Europe trip. They actually stayed at my place until Monday, but as I was away most of the time, I only really saw them on Saturday!

This week has been really busy with work! On Tuesday, I had a really nice dinner with Karen and Gill before they went home at the end of THEIR trip. It's kind of weird to be working and living a fairly normal type of life when everyone I know that comes to visit is on a big adventure. :-) Wednesday was drinks after work to celebrate a co-worker's birthday, and tonight me and a couple of others went for a quick cocktail to celebrate Friday before heading home.

This weekend looks to be fairly quiet - the weather's supposed to be nice, so I might just go hang out in a park for a while. My mom and sister are arriving in three and a half weeks, very exciting!

Some pictures from Wales!
